J.W.Benson Carriage Clock

This carriage clock is a rare find, it’s a J.W.Benson retailed carriage clock which was made for them by Alfred and Pierre Drocourt of Paris and retains the original outer leather covered case which is gilt stamped to the inside of the lid (see pictures) on the attractive purple velvet which cushions the clock in the ‘travel case’. The clock has benefited from a complete overhaul/service. When we fully overhaul a clock we take the whole clock to pieces, this means the case, the movement, the escapement and all the bevelled glass gets removed cleaned and polished. J.W.Benson would stamp their clocks with an oval stamp the same size as the stamp of Drocourt’s. We have often seen the Drocourt stamp over stamped with the J.W.B. The clock is also numbered 31946.  The clock strikes on a soft gong for the hour and half hour and the dial is free from any cracks or chips. A good ‘investment grade’ clock with the original case and key! J.W.Benson was established in 1847 by the brothers James William and Samuel Suckley Benson at Cornhill in the City of London. The business grew until the J.W.B. factory was bombed in WW2. They did carry on retailing though and sold very good quality watches and jewelry until they bought by Mappin & Webb in the 1980’s
