Fine Rosewood Mantel Clock – ‘Pendule Portative’
Now Sold
These little French mantel clocks were made to be portable, the handle on the top and the suspension made of silk thread allows them to be carried around the home with very little worry. The cases are superbly constructed in oak and rosewood and are usually inlaid with boxwood. This particular clock has a beautiful clear, silvered dial and the case is slightly slimmer than average. It’s a truly wonderful example with a maker’s stamp to the backplate we have not yet deciphered! What we do know, is that this clock was made around 1850 in or around the Paris region and then exported to the UK, most likely on a wind or steam powered ship crossing the channel. A wonderful Mantel clock.
